May brings about the dreaded exam season. Whether your child is doing SATS for the first time or sitting A levels the same principles apply.
Firstly always encourage and motivate NEVER compare your child to another sibling or another child. They are all different and learn at different speeds.
If you are really concerned about your child, the first thing you should do is contact your child’s teacher to discuss your concerns.
Make sure they have a quiet place in the house to revise which is well equipped with pens, paper, natural daylight and a decent lamp for night-time revising.
Past papers are an excellent way to revise a subject matter. It’s all about learning to read the question correctly. Often teachers will mark past papers – all you have to do is ask.
Have a clear well thought out revision plan which includes adequate breaks. It really is better to study little and often. Have plenty of water and snacks available to give them energy.
Getting stuck on a question is OK, move on to the next question and come back at the end of the paper. Remind them to ALWAYS read back through the paper if time allows.
And finally try to stay calm – these are not your exams and every child wants to do well. As a parent all we can do is encourage them and love them for who they are.
Good luck everyone!
